Strictly Education’s latest webinar, Working Together to Deliver Internal Scrutiny,
will take place at 12.00pm to 1.00pm on 7th October 2020, exploring the duties and expectations on trust boards relating to internal scrutiny.
The webinar will focus on how CEOs and CFOs should be working with the Audit & Risk Committee, or equivalent, to provide assurance to the entire trust board that the trust is compliant with statutory duties and contractual obligations.
What you can get out of the webinar
Internal scrutiny is intended to cover a broad range of aspects of academy trusts’ leadership and management processes and procedures, going far beyond the financial aspects that internal audits may have previously encompassed. The webinar, which aligns with the 2020 Academies Financial Handbook, will explore:
- The role of risk management
- How risk management guides the trust board’s approach to establishing processes
- Reporting structures that demonstrate the trust’s compliance
The webinar will be facilitated by two of Strictly Education’s internal scrutiny experts, Steve Bulmer, Group Head of Finance Services and Steve Barker, Head of Governance Services. There will be a mix of input from them, combined with real-time opinion polls and the opportunity to have your questions answered on air. Register here, to guarantee your place.
New statutory duty for internal scrutiny
The Academies Financial Handbook introduced the process of internal scrutiny to strengthen the requirement for qualified independent assurance that financial controls and risk management procedures are robust and effective in all single (SAT) and multi-academy trusts (MAT).
DfE requirements to submit your internal scrutiny report by 31st December
Trust boards must ensure compliance with the Internal Scrutiny requirements. Whilst the Department for Education (DfE) acknowledges the disruption caused by COVID-19, it is still expecting academy trusts to complete their internal scrutiny audit for the academic year ending 31st August, and submit a summary report alongside their audited financial statements by the 31st December deadline.
