Free EAL Webinars from FlashAcademy®

NAHT partner FlashAcademy®, a digital language-learning platform teaching English from 45 home languages, is running a series of free CPD webinars. Registrations are completely free and open to anyone looking for support for their EAL learners in both primary and secondary settings.

We’ve summarised the first session of the webinar series below, which took place last month, as well provided some insight into the upcoming live webinars for June.

EAL & Health: Free Recording

Currently, health is at the forefront of all our minds as the coronavirus pandemic occupies a huge space in the public consciousness.

In the first session of the webinar series, EAL specialist & FlashAcademy® Content Assistant, Helen Shelton, looked at what we need to consider when focusing on health and well-being activities for pupils who do not have English as their first language. Topics included:

  • Awareness of cultural differences in perceptions of health
  • Implications for teaching compulsory RSE and Health
  • Raising EAL pupil confidence and self-esteem by supporting EAL pupil voice.

The session concluded with a Q&A from participants. You can download the full recording here.

The Management of EAL Provision in High-Need Schools:

LIVE Wednesday 17 June, 3:30–4:30pm

Managing EAL provision in high-need schools is something that often requires a massive amount of support, especially in these challenging times.

Led by Claire Evans, Deputy Head at Anderton Park Primary School in Birmingham, this session will be all about the ‘best-practice’ strategies for schools to succeed when catering to the needs of their EAL learners.

EAL & Language Awareness for Teachers:

LIVE Tuesday 30 June, 3:30–4:30pm

The third session in the series will be particularly suitable for primary or secondary teachers of any subject who want to learn more about how to support EAL pupils. It may also be useful for teaching assistants, new EAL teachers or more experienced EAL teachers who would like a refresher.

You will gain a greater understanding of the theory of second language acquisition and the types of language pupils encounter within the school environment. You will also develop an awareness of how your use of language can affect EAL pupils’ understanding and their learning and how you can adapt your language effectively, and practice identifying and planning for specific language learning outcomes within curriculum subjects. This will be followed by a brief Q&A.
