Post COVID-19 Fatigue Support Case Study

Our whole school well-being support is at the heart of everything we do here at NAHT Wellness and Protect. Recently, our well-being provider shared a case study of a patient experiencing post COVID fatigue symptoms, detailing how we are working to proactively prevent and reduce absence by tackling more than just the root cause of a long term absence to ensure staff have the opportunity to thrive.

The well-being team were contacted in May 2020 by a female PE Teacher in her 30s who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March 2020. This patient had two previous hospital admissions due to breathlessness, had no previous medical history, and was a runner. Following her treatment from the NHS, she found everyday tasks as struggle and contacted the nurses in May 2020 when she was in a position to start resuming normal activity.

The well-being team supported this member of staff with the following services:

  • Nurse Support – Nurse Mandy supported, listened and offered her with general advice with regards to what she could do to not overexert herself and slowly resume normal activity.
  • Physiotherapy – Physiotherapist Mike assessed current medical fitness and joint fatigue, offered support to increase activity
  • Personal Trainer – In conjunction with physio, our personal trainer Ed gave her some coaching to slowly increase activity and build her strength
  • Counselling – Counsellor supported the fatigue and its effects on her mental health
  • Complementary Therapies – In this instance, due to the joint fatigue she was experiencing, the well-being provider funded massage to help her move towards resuming normal activity.
  • Relaxation Techniques and Positive Thinking – To help improve her mindset after the experience, patient had one to one sessions with Mindfulness and Well-being Consultant June to proactively support her mental health.

This patient is still working with the well-being team and is still receiving support. We are pleased to have supported this member of staff on her road to recovery and are delighted that she has returned to school to continue her teaching role with support.

We believe in providing schools and their staff with the best care to suit the needs of the school community as well as approaching recovery and support from all angles. Well-being is not one size fits all and different patients require different types of support. This case study is an excellent example of this. This support was provided to the patient at no cost to them and no additional cost to the school as it is inclusive of their staff absence insurance policy.
