Aims

  • Understand your responsibilities as a headteacher regarding governance.
  • See how governance works and what benefits it brings.
  • Be able to work collaboratively with your governance professional and chair.
  • Understand the benefits of good governance and how it can positively impact outcomes.
  • See examples of different structures of governance and be equipped to adapt these to your school.
  • Understand the importance efficient board reporting.
  • Know what governance isn’t nor should be.
  • Take away a tool kit of best practice, including guidance, advice and suggested proforma reporting.
  • Have the opportunity to work collaboratively throughout the session, learning from peers and sharing your own experiences.

Objectives

  • To ensure those new to headship are practically equipped to work effectively with their governing board, ensuring outcomes for pupils, and mental health and wellbeing for all, are prioritised.

Audience

New or emerging Headteachers, Deputy Headteachers, Assistant Headteachers, middle leaders and senior leaders, in primary and secondary settings.

Facilitators

Charlotte Harding

As Director of Professional Development, Charlotte leads NGA’s training and consultancy services including their leading e-learning platform, Learning Link.

Prior to this, Charlotte managed a number of DfE-funded contracts for NGA, ensuring the effective rollout of the reformed National Leaders of Governance and the Leading Governance programmes.

Charlotte has over 20 years’ recruitment and business management experience as well as working within a local authority education directorate where she delivered extensive governance and trustee support, recruitment and training. She is also an experienced governance professional. Charlotte has previously chair of governors of a maintained primary school and is currently chair of a multi academy trust.

Janet Myers

As governance development lead and NGA Consultant, Janet supports regional and local organisations to strengthen school governance and provides consultancy and training services, including external reviews of governance. She has facilitated on NGA’s Leading Governance programmes and was appointed a National Leader of Governance (NLG).

Janet has 12 years of managerial and leadership experience within blue-chip corporations. She has been a school governor since 2009 and has served in primary and secondary schools, both maintained and academies, as chair and as a parent governor. She currently chairs a MAT and the Cheshire West Governance Association.
