This course will explore the unique challenges and opportunities which come with being a Deputy or Assistant Headteacher and help you develop the different skills needed in managing and leading successfully wherever you are in your leadership journey.

Aim

By the end of this session you will feel confident in fully supporting your headteacher and have an impact as a member of the senior leadership team by developing your presence within school.

Objectives

You will learn the following:

  • the range and scope of roles and responsibilities and expectations of deputy and assistant head teachers
  • the relationship between the deputy or assistant head and the head teacher
  • the importance of building and nurturing strong working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, as well as identifying the barriers and how to overcome conflict
  • the importance of emotional intelligence in leadership
  • strategies for creating team cohesion, collaboration and positivity
  • how to gain buy-in from staff, influence change and have an impact
  • ways to establish leadership presence within school
  • how to remain resilient, prioritise workload and manage time wisely
  • an action plan to build on strengths and identify areas where further experience is needed, which can then be shared with your Headteacher on your return to school

Audience

New or emerging Deputy Headteachers, Assistant Headteachers, middle leaders and senior leaders, in primary and secondary settings.

Jan Taylor

Jan has served in education for over 20 years and has experience of working in a range of leadership roles.  As Head Teacher of an outstanding primary school she led the school to become one of the highest achieving primary schools in England.   After leaving headship several years ago she followed her passion for developing others with a specific focus on new and aspiring leaders.  She continues to work with leaders in education, coaching and facilitating both their professional and personal growth to support them in becoming the leader they want to be.  See her tips for new leaders here: Blog | Jan Taylor Coaching.
