Disadvantaged pupils and their families have been the focus of a lot of additional media attention since COVID-19 began to affect the country.  This course looks at some of the recent changes to Pupil Premium guidance, the expectations for 2023/24, current guidance on tutoring and historic and current research on disadvantaged pupils.  It also reviews some of the practical support in place to assist schools in working with disadvantaged pupils and their families.

The course is designed to give participants a clear understanding of the purpose of the Pupil Premium grant and what they should consider in producing a strong strategy.  There will be a review of some of the challenges facing disadvantaged pupils.  There will be many practical suggestions about approaches and practice, focusing on supporting all pupils as effectively as possible, in order to maximise the positive difference to disadvantaged pupils and families.

Aims

This course will enable participants to do the following:

To understand the main purpose of the Pupil Premium grant;
To understand the evidence around the potential additional challenges for disadvantaged pupils;
To consider how the DfE guidance around Pupil Premium strategies changed in 2021/22 and again in 2022/23 and understand how this informs what should be happening in 2023/24;
To consider the National Tutoring Scheme, especially in relation to school led training and disadvantaged pupils;
To reflect on the guidance of trusted sources of educational research, such as the EEF, as to which approaches schools might take with disadvantaged pupils;
To make the links between schools’ future plans and strong overall practice which will benefit all pupils;
To think about the provision schools already have in place and best practice in working with all families, including disadvantaged, to support all children;
To consider some of the approaches that schools are using to successfully engage families to support their children’s development;
To be aware of some of the organisations that schools might liaise with who support some of the most vulnerable families nationwide.
